My 10th Passion Project
For my 10th-grade passion projects, Liam Farkas, Caleb Gates and I all collaborated to build a mini ramp for the use for all of our peers and even faculty here at Animas High School! The reason we choose this project is that we are all passionate towards skateboarding. The faculty and staff here at Animas High School are very supportive of the skate community as well. Our group colluded with two seniors, Lilah Gutt and Kai Henriksen for there final senior project. We had a group discussion about the layout of the mini ramp and the plans to raise money. We hosted a skate competition on the 4th of may with a bake sale and ten dollar entry fees. In the end, we fundraised 297$. We also emailed out to local lumber companies for grants and donations. We got in touch with Alpine lumber and they gave us all of the 2x4 that was needed. With the extra money, we got the remaining wood necessary. Once we got all of our lumber back to the school, we just started building one piece after another. Now we are practically finished with our final product!
The next step to this process to perfect it would be to add a second layer of ply to the first one, for structural support and more strength in the wood so it doesn't break and will last for more years ahead. After we build lay the second layer of ply we would have to build a platform for the skaters to stand on above the transition, after we have the deck built we can incorporate the coping. The coping is used for grinds and slides. You can perform a vast majority of tricks on this metal bar. After we bolt in the coping we could put on this epoxy poly eutherian based skate paint that makes it waterproof for about 4 years. Another company we reached out to was a skate surfacing company called gator skin they make a very high-quality clay surface that is also waterproof. What our group could do next in our plans would be to expand this project into a complete bowl. If we were able to create 4 pockets in each corner and 2 more quarter pipes we could build a complete bowl. This full process would take all of our high school and maybe more. For we need supplies and money.
This project revealed to me as a learner, that teamwork and communication is a key necessity to success for a project such as this. In order to get work finished, we had to constantly be talking and helping one another out. In the begging of this process, only a couple of our group members read the instructions to the design for the ramp. Some arguments occur because of disagreement. So we really needed to talk. Once we got our disagreements out of the way we buckled down. Overall I'm really glad we got to build this ramp, for one it makes our school look better in the way that students have so much potential and opportunity here at Animas High School, also we are going to get some of our local school artists to paint over the epoxy layer for more beautiful look to it. I grew as a learner in multiple aspects during this project, I was very unaware how to use all the power tools in order to change the lumber.
