Self Assessment
When we were asked to choose an issue that we genuinely cared about, I honestly could not think of a single issue that felt relevant to me or affected me in any way. Luckily I was able to find an issue that instilled passion in me. It ended up being very eye-opening to choose a problem that I can care so much about now. I chose the issue of food waste in America and brought it to a local scale in my home town of Durango. I found this to have such a heavy effect on myself because I usually throw away so much food! This has made me aware that my actions are having consequences and those consequences are affecting the planet and my community. This issue, that I didn’t care for at all now travels with me every time I eat a meal. I’m not only more thankful for getting access to food but also way more conservative on how much food I order/cook.
I try so very hard to not throw away extra items in the trash bin. The little scraps eventually add up and create tremendous impacts on the environment, when we could be giving a tremendous amount of food to people in need. If supermarkets were able to donate in our local community we could be assisting people in poverty to get off the streets. My proposal aligns with my own strengths and interests because mainly I think my personable people skills are coming to hand. This is just giving empathy for the struggling folk of our town. I’m a very caring person so I believe this is an issue that needs to be confronted and solved. This also shaped another strength of mine, organization and being able to construct valid reasons This question was not correlated with my senior project however I did gain research skills and some more insights on how I could make an impact on our local community.
I established so many new methods on how I could get an idea out into the world. The most valuable information and interesting part of this whole project were to learn how to make a difference and contribute to helping this problem. Food waste gets thrown into landfills and decomposes into greenhouse-producing bacteria which is a major key component to climate change. We need to acknowledge this issue and figure out a plan to deal with the biggest issue of the 21st century and contribute our individual parts to stopping global warming. I have improved my overall knowledge on this subject and feel way more compelled to start saving more food, cooking my own food, buying food in a smarter way, and not throwing away any meals!
